How Much Concrete Do You Need? The Math and the Margin

Concrete is sold by volume and poured in one shot. Come up short halfway through and you get a cold joint you cannot undo, which is why the calculation and the margin both matter.

Concrete is unforgiving in a way most materials are not. You cannot pour half today and half tomorrow: the join between them, a cold joint, is a permanent weak line. So the goal is to order the right amount, once, with a small deliberate surplus. That starts with a volume you can trust.

The core formula

volume = length x width x thickness

All three in the same unit. Thickness is the one people forget to convert: 4 inches is 0.333 feet, not 4.

A slab 10 feet by 10 feet at 4 inches thick is 10 x 10 x 0.333 = 33.3 cubic feet. Concrete in the US is ordered in cubic yards, and there are 27 cubic feet in a yard, so that is 33.3 / 27 = 1.23 cubic yards. In metric, work in metres throughout and you get cubic metres directly.

Thickness is where people go wrong

The single most common error is mishandling thickness. It is measured in inches while the other two dimensions are in feet, and forgetting to convert throws the answer off by a factor of twelve. Always bring every dimension to the same unit before multiplying. A four-inch slab is one-third of a foot thick, and that fraction is the whole calculation for most patios and paths.

Footings, columns, and odd shapes

The same principle covers everything: find the volume. A footing is just a long thin slab, length by width by depth. A round column (or a pier, or a pond) uses the cylinder volume, which is pi times the radius squared times the height. Break any complex pour into rectangles and cylinders, find each volume, and add them up. There is no shape a mix of those two cannot approximate closely enough to order from.

  1. Convert every dimension to the same unit first, especially thickness.
  2. Multiply length by width by thickness for each rectangular section.
  3. Use pi x radius squared x height for any round section.
  4. Add the sections together for total volume.
  5. Add 5 to 10 percent waste, then round up to how the supplier sells it.
