What a Carbon Footprint Number Actually Measures

Two calculators can give you wildly different totals from the same answers. Neither is broken. They are drawing the boundary in different places.

A carbon footprint estimates the greenhouse gases attributable to your activity over a year. The output looks precise, usually a single figure in tonnes. The precision is an illusion, and understanding why makes the number far more useful.

CO2e, not CO2

Footprints are quoted in carbon dioxide equivalent because carbon dioxide is not the only gas that matters. Each gas is converted using its global warming potential over 100 years, so everything lands on one comparable scale.

One kilogram of nitrous oxide is counted as roughly 265 kg of CO2e. This is why a leaking air conditioning unit can matter out of all proportion to its size.

Why calculators disagree

The largest source of variation is where the boundary is drawn. Some tools count only direct emissions: your fuel, your gas, your electricity. Others include embedded emissions in everything you buy, from food production to the manufacture of your phone. The second approach routinely produces a figure two or three times larger for the same person.

  • Scope. Direct emissions only, or the full supply chain behind your purchases.
  • Electricity grid. A kilowatt-hour in Norway carries a fraction of the emissions of one in Poland or India.
  • Whether public infrastructure, such as roads and hospitals, is allocated per citizen.
  • How air travel is treated, since radiative forcing at altitude can double the effective impact of a flight.
  • The vintage of the emission factors used, which are revised as grids decarbonise.

What actually moves the number

Household footprints are dominated by a short list. In most developed countries the ranking is broadly consistent, even though the absolute values vary.

The gap between the top and bottom of that table is roughly twentyfold. Recycling is worth doing and is not where the leverage is. Flying, heating and driving are.

The limits of the personal frame

Individual footprints are a useful lens and an incomplete one. A large share of any person's emissions is determined by infrastructure they do not control: how the local grid generates power, whether public transport exists, how buildings were constructed decades ago. Someone in a well-insulated flat on a hydro grid has a low footprint substantially by circumstance.

The honest use of the number is as a personal baseline that tells you where your own leverage sits, rather than as a score to be compared or a substitute for policy.
